Conversion Rate Optimization Real Time Using Search Console

Are there simple things to do to increase conversion rate optimization?

Are you losing traffic and potential sales due to these common website issues?

Case Study: How to use Search Console, heat maps and other stats to make more money!

Here is a video screen-cast of study of the optimization of website: https://AllInclusiveVacationAndTravel.com. This website is over 5 years old and has had up to 100 pages of content over those years. I have revised the site many times in the process of getting SEO based traffic.

Today the site ranks for over 50 keyword phrases in it’s target market of timeshare promotions. I recently rehabbed the whole site and reduced the pages down to just 5. I have a main sales page and several pages like contact, form and terms.

First things first, how fast is the site?

In this screen-cast we talk about how to increase a website conversion rate. There are several things that you should look at. Did you know that every second it takes your site to load you lose visitors!

Take a minute and check your website page speed. If your site is taking more than 7 seconds to load you are losing most of your mobile traffic and a portion of computer driven searches. It’s important to check this first. Read: Page Speed Matters

How’s it look on a mobile screen?

The second thing I would check is how the site looks on a mobile device.  Due to the smaller screen, a cell phone will display a website really poorly if it is not optimized.  Many WordPress websites actually use a free template that is not very good!

You should use a paid template when possible and one that actually has a reputation for being quick.  I use the Avada WordPress Theme which has hundreds of settings that control everything from font to tweaking the caching settings!

Is your sites too content too bulky?

I have reduced the overall page length and amount of words by over 50%!  I did this because I saw a heat map that shows just how fast a consumer will start to skim.  When I say skim I mean top to bottom of the entire page in many cases.

In many cases the consumer will only read title and image descriptions.  I have found that even having a video isn’t a very good hook.  My video gets almost no clicks or I would say less than 10% of total visitors.

I am finding that you need to design a page to give the critical info and then have pop-outs or added pages for more info.  So in the case of this website, I have found better results with less content.

How to do onsite optimization using Search Console

Once you have a site that is fast and the content is tweaked the real fun starts.  If you go to Search (see this article) console you can see what keyword phrases you rank for.  Look through those phrases and make a list of words that you have not included on your site.

Remember that each phrase could rank a different page so you will need to isolate the data for each page as you prepare to optimize that page.  I found that I did not have certain words on my site that Google was sending me traffic for. This is a quick way to increase your traffic.

Heat maps show you what’s up

Another idea and an important one is a heat map!  I wrote an article about this:  Heat Maps: Record Visitors As They Scroll

A heat map can show you exactly the experience the visitor is having.  I discovered that traffic from cellular was almost a 100% loss!  There was no way for consumers to click and call from their phones.  This caused consumers to move onto the next company.

Retargeting: Follow your traffic home!

A final note is about re-targeting.  Why not follow your consumers home?  You can target visitors that have taken a certain action or just visited a certain page offer.  This allows you to re-market to someone who saw a specific thing you are selling!

It’s called retargeting and remarketing.  Ever seen a message that says this site uses cookies?  We’ll you can add a tag to your site that will allow you to buy retargeting ad-space.  Sites like Facebook, Google and YouTube all do retargeting.

So if a customer comes to my site I can follow them to their Facebook and have an add placed in their Facebook sidebar.  The idea is that they will get redirected back for a sale.  Another way this is used is to offer a discount or coupon for the item they were looking at.  Read more about retargeting here.
